Historic Mapping
Anquet has an impressive range of 403 Historic Maps in its Historic Mapping Series.
Each product uses the same geographical area as the Ordnance Survey Explorer series, but instead of containing OS 1:25,000 scale mapping, these product contain Historical Mapping.
History
These Historic Maps of Great Britain reach back over the last 200 years and hold a wealth of historical
information about the development of the landscape as it is today. See England and Wales before the trains,
and watch how the road and water networks develop. These maps have been re-projected to match current
OS Landranger maps and are completely seamless. Viewing them in Anquet with Synchronized Screens turned on makes comparisons between different map dates or with their modern day equivalent not only enjoyable, but even more informative.
Digital Maps Available
We currently have four different series of maps available:
- Ordnance Survey 1805-1874 - 19th Century Landscapes
- Ordnance Survey 1896-1904 - Victorian Landscapes
- Ordnance Survey 1919-1926 - Inter-War Landscapes
- Ordnance Survey 1945-1948 - Post-War Landscapes
Ordnance Survey 1805-1874 - 19th Century Landscapes
 |
These Historical Maps are based on Britain's first national mapping project, Ordnance
Survey's One-Inch ('Old Series') maps which were first published between 1805
and 1874.
Just the dates of these maps tell a story - it took almost 70 years to map
England and Wales. This is a long time before GPS and aerial photography, and so
Ordnance Survey were in fact developing new techniques to make this first
project possible.
The maps are all hand drawn, and beautifully crafted. The amount of work put into their creation is very evident.

Ordnance Survey 1896-1904 - Victorian Landscapes
 |
These Historical Maps are based on Ordnance Survey’s Revised New Series maps which were
first published between 1896 and 1904. The late Victorian landscape is plainly
evident.
With the introduction of these maps, the Ordnance Survey moved into the realm of
colour. Comparing all of these map types, this is probably the largest jump in
style of cartography, and in these maps the heritage of the modern day
Landranger map starts to become evident.

Ordnance Survey 1919-1926 - Inter-War Landscapes
 |
These Historical Maps are based on Ordnance Survey’s Popular Edition maps which were first
published between 1919 and 1926.
These maps start to use some of the colours evident in the modern day Landranger
map, yet the layout of the cartography is very different.
Map Coverage: England and Wales
|
Ordnance Survey 1945-48 - Post-War Landscapes
 |
These Historical Maps are based on Ordnance Survey’s New Popular Edition maps which were
first published between 1945 and 1948.
Again the cartography changes, almost as if these maps were designed to be
factual and useful rather than a work of art. The fonts used are bolder and the
information conveyed clearer.
